Is CHS a permanent condition?
Research suggests that CHS is a permanent condition that can only be effectively treated by quitting cannabis. Continuing to use cannabis despite CHS can lead to potentially life threatening complications.
CHS is an episodic syndrome with vomiting episodes that last for 24–48 h at a time separated by asymptomatic periods that may last weeks or months [13].
Timeline of withdrawal
Research states that brain receptors called cannabinoid 1 receptors start to return to normal after 2 days without marijuana, and they regain normal functioning within 4 weeks of stopping the drug.
Symptoms start to go away within a day or two after stopping marijuana use. In people with CHS, symptoms almost always come back if they use the drug again.
Most people with CHS who stop using cannabis have relief from symptoms within 10 days. But it may take a few months to feel fully recovered. As you recover, you begin to resume your usual eating and bathing habits.
So, CHS may be mistaken for uremia, as in these 2 patients with chronic kidney disease, hyperemesis gravidarum, bulimia, and cyclical vomiting syndrome.
- IV (intravenous) fluid replacement for dehydration.
- Medicines to help decrease vomiting.
- Pain medicine.
- Proton-pump inhibitors, to treat stomach inflammation.
- Frequent hot showers.
- Prescribed medicines that help calm you down (benzodiazepines)
The only way to stop CHS and its symptoms is to completely quit using cannabis. Most people who quit using cannabis experience no more CHS symptoms within 10 days, but sometimes it may take weeks or months for symptoms to stop. Symptoms of CHS likely won't return if you've completely stopped using cannabis.
CHS comprises three phases: prodromal, hyperemetic and recovery.
Can you still smoke weed if you have cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome? Avoiding smoking or taking cannabis is the best way to prevent CHS and scromiting. Because the best treatment option for CHS is stopping your THC use, if you have CHS and continue to use cannabis, your symptoms probably won't improve.
