How do you stop chenille yarn from shedding?
Once you complete your knitting, the best way to combat shedding yarn is to wash the project (if it's a washable yarn). Usually, hand washing in a gentle detergent, and drying the piece with the air-dry setting of your dryer for around 10 or 15 minutes will work.
Select the delicate cycle on the washing machine, and make sure the water temperature is cold and the spin is on low. Add the appropriate amount of Delicate Wash according to the machine and load size. For chenille blankets, throws, or bathrobes, machine wash using the normal cycle.
If you've never even heard of the term 'chenille yarn' before, then it may make more sense to think of it as velvet yarn. Although the production process for chenille yarns and velvet fabric are slightly different, when it comes to yarn they're essentially the same.
Another bonus that comes with chenille's territory is its ease of care and maintenance. No pilling or shedding here; and if you get a stain on it you can easily wash it at home.
Many people choose chenille for their upholstery because of its texture and softness. However, while chenille is durable, it is not a pet-friendly fabric because its pile is made of many tiny loops that can easily be destroyed by animal claws. It is also easily soiled, and often impossible to repair.
Chenille: Chenille is stronger than most fabrics and it looks great. Chenille can sometimes be made from cotton so as you can imagine cotton chenille has the same advantages and disadvantages as cotton. Typically chenille is made from rayon and olefin, which are synthetic materials, which are durable and easy to clean.
Vacuum the entire surface of the upholstery, including any areas you didn't shave. This helps to prevent those areas from pilling later.
For example, a good size blanket takes about 225 yards of yarn," says Weil. "If you are making that with four strands of super bulky yarn, you would need 900 yards total. If you are using two strands of a jumbo yarn, you would need about 450, and so on."
Chenille fabric is delicate, and can pill or shed easily if it's not properly taken care of.
It has slightly lower light resistance than other fabrics and should be kept out of direct sunlight so as to avoid any fading or sun damage. With normal use, the pile could flatten or become crushed but regular vacuuming with a soft brush attachment should help to revive the pile.

Typically we only recommend dry cleaning. But chenille is the cooler cousin of Merino so it doesn't require as much attention.
