Motor Horsepower | Size Breaker | |
---|---|---|
10 | 230V 460V | 50 30 |
15 | 230V 460V | 70 40 |

- Single Phase AC Motor FLA (Amperes) = (P [kW] × 1000) / (V × cos ϕ)
- Single Phase AC Motor FLA (Amperes) = (P [HP] × 746) / (V × cos ϕ × η)
- Three Phase AC Motor FLA (Amperes) = (P [kW] × 1000) / (V × 1.732 × cos ϕ)
For a three-phase generator, the full load current is calculated as I = 1000 × S / (√3 × V). Where, S is the generator rating in kilo-volt-ampere (kVA), and V is the generator rated voltage in volt (V). For a single-phase generator, the full load current is calculated as: I = 1000 × S / V.
At 575 volts, a 3-phase motor draws 1 amp per horsepower. At 460 volts, a 3-phase motor draws 1.27 amps per horsepower. At 230 volts, a 3-phase motor draws 2.5 amps per horsepower. At 230 volts, a single-phase motor draws 5 amps per horsepower.

A general step for converting HP to amps for all types of circuit is given as: Step1: converting HP to watts, by multiplying HP with 746. Step2: dividing watts with voltage(V) and efficiency to get the required amps(I).
What is the formula for HP for 3 phase motor?
Use this formula to estimate motor horsepower. Horsepower(hp)= Voltage x Amperage x % EFF x power factor x 1.73/746.
FLC or Full Load Current is typically used when dealing with the theoretical capacity of a motor, whereas FLA or Full Load Amps is used to describe the actual known capacity of a particular motor.
The starting current in a three phase induction motor is five times the full load current while the full load slip is 4%.
Watts = Amps x 120Volts (homes in the U.S. run 120 volt circuits in most rooms, unless it is a special appliance like a dryer). Therefore, we cannot have more than 1920 watts running on a single 20 amp circuit at a time.
According to the National Electrical Code, you cannot exceed 80% of a circuit breaker's limit. This means that the above load of 18 amps exceeds the limit of 16 amps on a 20-Amp breaker.
It is 120/240 volts at 60 Hz.
Full Load Amps, or F.L.A., represents the amount of current the motor is designed to draw at the rated horsepower.
A full load current is the largest current that a motor or other device is designed to carry under particular conditions. The starters shall be suitably rated to continuously carry the full load current of the motor and also accept the starting current surges without tripping.
As previously mentioned, a full load is a shipment that takes up all of the space in a container or freight vehicle. As such, rather than being based on the load itself, the measurement and cost of a full load is determined by the units of measurement of the container or storage space in the freight vehicle.
Typical load ranges: acceptable for a short-period: 20 - 120% acceptable for operating: 50 - 100% optimum efficiency: 60 - 80%
How do I calculate amps needed?
A simple formula for calculating amps is to take the watts and divide that by the volts. So, for instance, if the wattage of the lighting fixture you're working with is 60 and the volts are 12, divide 60 by 12 and you will get five, which are the amps.

What Causes a Motor to Draw Higher Amps? Motors require a certain output in watts in order to function, and this is the result of a voltage multiplied by amps. So when voltage falls, resistance scales up in order to supply the difference, and the motor will also draw more current.

What is the difference between HP and amps?
Amperes are a measure of the rate of flow of electricity, whereas horsepower is a measurement of work divided by time, so amperes and horsepower cannot be equated or converted to one another (it would be like trying to convert pounds to miles).
You are absolutely correct: The most a tool that is drawing 15 amps from a wall outlet can deliver is 2.41 hp.

The three currents of a three phase system do not sum to total anything. A 250 Amp breaker is three 250A single pole breakers with the handles tied together by one bar so that they operate together — if any one of the phase CBs trips, because its one wire is over 250 Amps, then all three phases disconnect together.
If the nameplate says it needs a 100 amp circuit, then you need to provide at least 100 amps for each leg. A 100 amp circuit breaker will provide 100 amps on all three wires.
3 Phase means there are three phases 120 degree apart from each other for transmitting or distributing power, 200 amps means each phase has a current capacity of 200 amps under normal condition, beyond 200 amps the 3 phase line will be over loaded and have a poor voltage regulation.
Full load means that all possible current is going through the load, i.e. either a short circuit or some arbitrary maximum current as defined by the situation or problem.
The start-up current can be as high as five to eight times the full load current. Electrical systems are designed to cater for the steady state running period conditions.
Amps are flowing because of the DIFFERENCE in applied voltage and back EMF divided by the internal resistance. If you load down the motor, the RPM will decline, the applied voltage is unchanged and the back EMF will fall. The difference in voltage will increase and the amps will also increase.
What is the most common 3-phase motor?
A KEB 3 phase induction motor – rotor inside the stator. The squirrel cage design is the most common type of induction motor because they are self-starting, reliable, and economical. In this design, the rotor looks similar to a hamster wheel or 'squirrel cage', thus the name.
A three-phase connection, on the other hand, consists of three separate conductors that are needed for transmitting electricity. In a single-phase power supply system, the voltage may reach up to 230 Volts. But on a three-phase connection, it can carry a voltage of up to 415 Volts.
A common supply voltage is 120V/208V 3 phase Wye configuration. 120 volts is measured from each phase to neutral voltage (neutral wire is center-tapped) and 208 volts is measured phase to phase.
- Estimate the power in watts (the nominator of the expression), 1 hp × 746 = 746 W .
- Evaluate the product in the denominator, 200 V × 0.92 × 90% = 165.6 V . ...
- Make a fraction of these numbers and find the final horsepower to amps value, 746 / 165.6 = 4.505 A .

Most electric motors are designed to run at 50% to 100% of rated load. Maximum efficiency is usually near 75% of rated load. Thus, a 10-horsepower (hp) motor has an acceptable load range of 5 to 10 hp; peak efficiency is at 7.5 hp. A motor's efficiency tends to decrease dramatically below about 50% load.
