There is approximately a 1/6" difference between each half-size (e.g., between 9 and 9.5, between a 9.5 and a 10, and so on)
A half-size represents a 1/8” difference. It may not seem significant but is enough to distinguish between comfort and discomfort. Because there is no standardisation for shoe sizing, a half size difference will also depend on the brand of shoe. With some makes, a half size will be more significant than others.
W= Wide and M= Medium width. I can't speak to the appropriate width for the men's sizing, but I wear a size 8.5 in women's with a slightly wider foot than average and I wear the 7M in men's for this specific shoe.
To find your shoe size, start by placing a piece of paper on the floor and tracing the outline of your bare foot onto it. Then, use a ruler to draw a rectangle around the outline that touches the furthest point on each side of your foot. Finally, measure the length and width of the rectangle to get your shoe size.

The only time that you could wear a shoe in a bigger size is when purchasing a sneaker but you should only go up about half a size. The reason for this is that our feet tend to swell because fluid accumulates due to gravity with prolonged standing and weight baring activities.
A half size in shoes is only 1/8 of an inch in added length. Shoes size can vary for many reasons, from sports injuries to weight gain and age. It's not uncommon to go up a half size if your feet or arch height begins to become more flat overtime.
There will be an obvious difference in size, which is usually known as barleycorn. It usually measures 8.46 mm and is equivalent to ⅓ inch. To get a better fit, half sizes were therefore introduced, with a 4.23 mm variation between each sequential half size.
When purchasing the perfect shoe, fit is always the most important. If your shoe is too tight, you may have blisters, numbness and general discomfort; to avoid this, many experts recommend buying a running shoe half a size larger.
How much room should be in the toe of a shoe?
Check the space at the end of the shoe.
Stand up and make sure there is 3/8" or 1/2" (about the width of your finger) between your longest toe (usually the second toe) and the end of the shoe. Always stand and walk around in the shoes to see if they are comfortable, fit well, and don't chafe or rub anywhere.
Wearing shoes that are too big can produce some of the same problems as shoes that are too small. If your foot slides forward in the shoe with each step, you can get black toenails or lose toenails. 7 You may also get blisters or irritate your bunions or hammertoes from the extra friction and impact.

Shoe sizes come in a length and width. The number refers to the length of your foot. The letter, or group of letters, refers to the width of your foot. Many men's shoes are only available in medium widths.
One tell-tale sign of wide feet is if your feet feel cased-in in every pair of shoes. Once you measure your foot, you can tell for sure. If your foot width is 4 1/16” in a size 9 shoe or 3 3/16” in a size 7, then you are considered to have wide feet (C/D).
For most people requiring wider shoes, a wider shoe at the ball- of-the-foot and toe-box is most important. When measured at the ball-of-the-foot, the difference between shoe widths is approximately 1/4”. A wide width is 1/4” wider than a medium width and an extra wide width is 1/2” wider than a medium width.

Should my toes touch the end of my shoes?
Your toes should have ample room to spread wide. Your toes shouldn't feel constricted or touch the end of the shoe. Your heel should feel comfortably cupped in the back of the shoe, which ensures that your foot won't slip out from the back of the shoe.
Do people's feet change as they get older? They don't change in size, necessarily. But feet may get wider, not longer, as we age. They change in their elasticity the same way other body parts do – tissue becomes less tight, causing the increased width and sagging of the arches.
Other painful effects of wearing shoes that are too big include: Corns and calluses: caused by excessive pressure on the toes. Metatarsalgia: caused by too much pressure on the balls of your feet. Disrupted natural stride: resulting in Achilles tendonitis, arch pain, and pain in the calf muscles.
Generally speaking, there should be about one finger's width of space between your longest toe and the end of the shoe. Another way to check this is to slip a finger between the heel of your foot and the heel of your shoe. There should be just enough space for your finger to fit nice and snugly.
The further you run the more your foot will naturally expand. This means it's wise to have just a little extra room (about a thumb's width) between your longest toe and the front of the shoe. With this in mind, your running shoe should be around a half size larger than the shoe size you usually get.
To check proper fit around your heel, place your index finger behind the shoe's heel and your heel. You should be able to slide your finger between them with little force. If your finger cannot fit, the shoes are too tight. If your finger has too much room, the shoes are too large.
But if you thought that too-tight shoes were uncomfortable, try wearing a pair that's a size or two too big. You could wind up with complications from metatarsalgia, an affliction in which the ball of your foot can become inflamed and painful (via the Mayo Clinic).
Shoes will typically stretch all on their own as you wear them. Leather shoes, whether it be men's dress shoes or women's heels, will fit over time. But if they are too tight and uncomfortable to wear in, try some of these easy hacks to stretch your shoes up to half a size or so to accommodate your feet.
Properly fitting sneakers will:
Fit snuggly but not too tight. Provide wiggle room for your toes. Not push into your toenails. Cup your heel comfortably.
As a rule of thumb (or toe), you should have about 3/8″ to 1/2″ of room from the tip of your longest toe to the end of the shoe. Your big toe is not automatically your longest toe. Pick the shoes that match your foot shape.
How do you know when shoes are too small?
If your toes don't face straight ahead, seem crammed together, or are overlapping each other, it's likely your shoes are too tight. When shoes fit properly, there's space between each toe, and the toes face straight forward, not turned toward either side.
Hammer toes occur when the joints in your toes do not get enough space in tight shoes. Instead, they push and shape them to adapt to the new limited environment. Hammer toes cause immense pain to your feet, and over time, form corns and calluses on the top of the bend, resulting in even more discomfort.

When you measure your foot for shoe size, add about 0.6 inches (or 1.5 centimeters) to the length. If you're between sizes, we recommend going up. As you can see, the difference of one whole size is only about a half-inch (less than 1 centimeter). The difference of a half size is—at most—a quarter of an inch.
